As far as packing and preparing for winter in Banff and Lake Louise, you can anticipate a laid-back feeling to both stays.
This winter in Banff and Lake Louise itinerary is best suited for travelers who are seeking outdoor pursuits; while you don’t have to be a skier, it’s especially suited to those who like to hit the slopes!
We loved being on the Gold Level during both of our Fairmont stays while scouting this itinerary and would recommend the same for our travelers.
The Trip
Day 1: Arrival in Calgary
Your Canadian adventure begins as you touch down in Calgary, the gateway to the Rockies.
After picking up your rental car or being greeted by your private transfer, set out on a scenic ninety-minute drive to Banff. Expect breathtaking views of towering peaks and snow-dusted forests as you cruise into this charming town.

Affectionately known as The Castle in the Rockies, the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs, will be your first stay during this winter escape. The property combines timeless elegance with cozy alpine charm and offers stunning mountain views at every turn.
After settling in, enjoy a quiet evening and perhaps treat yourself to dinner at one of the hotel’s gourmet restaurants to gear up for the adventures ahead.
The Crown Suite at Fairmont Banff Springs

The 1,500-square feet suite features access via private elevator, a reception foyer, spacious entertaining area, bar, powder room and multiple windows. Both bedrooms feature a king bed, window seat and modern bathroom.
Day 2: Winter Wonderland Activities in Banff
Your first full day in Banff is all about immersing yourself in a winter wonderland. Choose from an array of thrilling activities right at your doorstep.

For a quintessential Canadian experience, try ice walking in Johnston Canyon, which is just a short trip from Banff.
Trek along suspended walkways alongside frozen waterfalls and icicles glimmering in the sunlight—sure to be a magical sight.

If you prefer something more serene, you can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through Banff’s snowy meadows, or lace up your skates for a picturesque spin around Lake Minnewanka.
Whichever activity you choose, your SmartFlyer travel advisor and Fairmont’s concierge team will be ready to tailor the perfect itinerary for your day of exploration
Day 3: Skiing Around Banff
No winter trip to Banff is complete without hitting the slopes. Just fifteen minutes from the Fairmont Banff Springs lies Banff Sunshine Village, one of Canada’s premier ski destinations. With over 3,500 acres of skiable terrain and runs for all skill levels, you’ll find plenty of adventure whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned skier.

Finish your day with après-ski at one of Banff’s lively pubs or return to the Fairmont to ice skate or take a relaxing dip in the outdoor heated pool, complete with unbeatable views of the snow-capped mountains.
For dinner, you have ample options on property to soak up the views.
Day 4: Lake Louise, Canada
Say goodbye to Banff as you make the forty-five-minute drive to the breathtaking Lake Louise.

This stretch is much more than a simple transfer instead acting as a cinematic experience along the Trans-Canada Highway with cascading views of frozen rivers, towering peaks, and dense pine forests blanketed in snow—it’s no wonder it’s considered one of the world’s most scenic drives.
Upon arrival, check into Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, and take in its perfect perch overlooking the iconic turquoise lake now crystalline with ice. Spend your afternoon savoring a piping hot cup of artisanal hot chocolate as you take in unobstructed views of the majestic Victoria Glacier.
Come evening time, pop outside to the Ice Bar and warm up from the inside out with a spiked beverage before retiring to Wallister Stube for fondue.
Lakeview Suite at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

These 900-square-feet luxury suites offer spectacular views of Lake Louise and the Victoria Glacier and consist of two private bedrooms with two queen beds and a king bed. Enjoy the additional space and privacy of three full bathrooms. This is ideal accommodation for larger families and extended stay guests.
If you’re more drawn to adventure, opt for a morning of cross-country skiing on freshly groomed trails that meander through the hushed beauty of the surrounding forest. Afterward, explore the enchanting ice castle that charms visitors on Lake Louise’s frozen surface each winter. End your day with fine dining at the Chateau—we love the locally-inspired tasting menu at Fairview Bar & Restaurant.
Day 6: Skiing at Lake Louise
For the skiers in your group, it’s time to take on the slopes at Lake Louise Ski Resort, one of North America’s most celebrated ski destinations. Just a few minutes’ drive from the Chateau, the mountain offers trails fit for every skill level, whether you’re carving down challenging black diamond runs or cruising beginner-friendly slopes. Perhaps the best surprise of your time at the resort will be the high-quality dining on offer in better runs—don’t miss the ramen!

Non-skiers are equally spoiled for choice here—with options like gondola sightseeing rides that offer panoramic views of the Rockies or simply relaxing by the fire with a good book at the resort’s lodges, you can’t go wrong. After an exhilarating day on the mountain, return to the Chateau’s newly renovated, award-winning spa to unwind and rejuvenate.
Day 7: Winter Adventures at Lake Louise
Make the most of your last full day in this pristine winter haven. Hop on a dog sled tour, an unforgettable way to traverse the icy wilderness guided by a team of enthusiastic huskies. Alternatively, reevaluate serenity with a tranquil sunset hike to Mirror Lake for a final moment of peace in nature’s masterpiece.

If you’re feeling contemplative, spend your afternoon simply walking frozen over Lake Louise, soaking in the luminescent glow of the surrounding peaks. Cap off your evening with a celebratory dinner and toast to the adventures you’ve had over the past week.
Day 8: Departure Day
On your final morning, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the Chateau before embarking on the two-hour drive back to Calgary for your departing flight. Reflect on the memories made in this real-life snow globe knowing you’re taking home stories you’ll cherish forever.
