The Top Hotels and Suites of Los Cabos – Part 1

Over the past 40 years Los Cabos has transformed from a sleepy fishing village, a place to get off the grid, to an epicenter of luxury resorts, with more on the way. In fact, it is so dense with luxury properties, we are splitting our report on top suites into two parts, starting this week with the Scenic Route, formerly known as the Tourist Corridor.

1. Montage Los Cabos
2. Las Ventanas al Paraiso
3. Esperanza, an Auberge Resort
4. The Cape, A Thompson Hotel
5. Chileno Bay Resort, An Auberge Resort
6. Grand Velas Boutique Hotel
7. Solaz, A Luxury Collection Resort

Rated 5-stars by Forbes Travel Guide, its inspectors write, “There’s no improving upon the setting for the new Montage Los Cabos. Perched on a gentle slope overlooking a gorgeous golden sand beach in a protected cove, with waves breaking cinematically onto the shore, the resort benefits from one of the most magnificent locations in Los Cabos. Give Montage credit, though. The brand has maximized the surroundings for its first property outside the U.S., pairing the stunning views of Bahía Santa María with chic, ultra-luxe beachfront accommodations. The 122 rooms and 52 residences showcase graceful contemporary Mexican styling, a seamless flow from indoor to outdoor spaces, and a rather elegant simplicity; the latter characterized by a chameleon-like design pattern in which the resort seems to merge with its picturesque environs. The amenities, too, are memorable, and include the largest spa on the Baja California peninsula, as well as a brand-new golf course designed by former Masters Tournament champion Fred Couples.”

There’s a chef’s kitchen with large island and a separate indoor dining table for eight persons. You will find an open plan living and dining rooms with sliding doors provide an easy transition to outdoor living space with a large terrace. The large terrace features an outdoor dining table for six, gas fire pit, built-in summer kitchen and a Wolf BBQ. The primary king bedroom opens onto the main terrace with chaise lounges, offers a walk-in closet and an ensuite bathroom with multi-jet shower and deep soak bathtub.

2. Las Ventanas al Paraiso

Forbes Travel Guide writes of its 5-star pick, “Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort almost appears like an oasis in the middle of a desert, if only it weren’t overlooking the sparkling Sea of Cortez. The last of Los Cabos’ luxury hotels to reopen after 2014’s Hurricane Odile, everything about Las Vetnanas feels refreshed yet reassuringly the same. The resort was rebuilt exactly as it had stood — even the gorgeous landscaping — at the request of owner Ty Warner. (Yes, of Beanie Baby fame). During the nearly year-long closure, the resort spent time on staff training, adding new programming and amenities that upped the luxury factor even further.”

Poised directly on the water’s edge with panoramic views over the Sea of Cortez, the Ty Warner Mansion spans 28,000 square feet, created by renowned architect Jorge Torres with interiors by Robert Couturier. Accommodating just a total of six guests, you get a dedicated staff and private chef, a large selection of exclusive wine, champagne and tequila from your private cellar, and a fireworks display on request.

3. Esperanza, an Auberge Resort

The Telegraph says, “This Auberge resort is the most upscale of Los Cabos’ beachfront hotels, occupying an enviable whale-watching vantage point right at the very tip of the Baja Peninsula. A luxurious spa, generous smattering of pools and memorable dining options make it a celebrity favorite.”

Also 5-stars from Forbes, its inspectors say, “If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to live like a celebrity while on vacation, Cabo San Lucas’ Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection should give you a taste of the good life. Returning guests appreciate the property’s signature features like the multi-tiered oceanfront pool and the only private beach in Los Cabos. The recently renovated palapa-topped spa offers an extensive menu of cutting-edge treatments alongside experiences deeply rooted in philosophies of the traditional medicine wheel. The gorgeous tiered cliffside Cocina del Mar restaurant is a Cabo classic. Perched on the hillside of Punta Ballena, just 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, this 57-room hotel has hosted countless stars (Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston) and luxury seekers alike.”

Inviting living quarters adorned with original Mexican art, a separate dining area and a full kitchen give you plenty of space, while a dedicated butler and private chef allow you to revel in the moment.

4. The Cape, A Thompson Hotel

Conde Nast Traveler writes, “A mod-Mexican restaurant from Enrique Olvera, four bars with note-perfect cocktails (over 100 and counting), two pools, an amazing spa, and not a trace of hacienda-style architecture—in short, just what Cabo needed. Kudos to Thompson Hotels for introducing a place in an otherwise crowded market with uninterrupted views of El Arco and the Bahía San Lucas horizon. Mexico City architect Javier Sanchez has combined a relaxed 1960s Southern California-meets-Baja aesthetic. It’s refreshingly grown-up, perfect for couples, but without an ounce of pretension. Every room has a balcony to view the Pacific (some with private plunge pools and butler service), plus Cabo’s only rooftop lounge to relish each and every sunset.”

The Telegraph says, “Mellow. Chic. Absolutely littered with wonderful amenities. Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, the sophomore effort from the fabled Auberge group (owners of Esperanza down the road) is young and already staking its claim as one of Cabo’s finest hotels.”

Forbes Travel Guide continues, “Sitting on one of Los Cabos’ only swimmable beaches, Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection is the sexy younger sibling of its Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star sister property Esperanza. Halfway between the culture of San Jose del Cabo and the shopping and nightlife of Cabo San Lucas, Chileno Bay offers an escape that’s as action-packed or laid-back as you wish it to be.

Ideal for romance or active young families alike, the 92 room-and-villa resort is equal parts L.A. cool and Palm Springs chic — bleached woods and minimalist landscaping blend easily into the desert surroundings, letting the azure-blue ocean waters and central three-tiered pool do most of the jaw dropping.”

Five Bedroom Signature Sky Villa

With 9,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor living, the expansive, a bi-level rooftop terrace opens onto ocean views, and features an outdoor kitchen with grill and dining area, a private pool for cooling off during the day, and a hot tub Inside, there’s a full gourmet kitchen with a wine cellar, a dining area for eight, and a living room. Two master bedrooms each have a terrace, and a large contemporary bathroom with a tub, dual vanities, and shower. There are three additional bedrooms, each of which has its own balcony and ensuite bathroom with outdoor shower.

The property has five food-and-beverage establishments: Loto, 51 Bar, Del Mar, Roca Bar, and the Pool Bar. All are part of the all-inclusive package and each offers guests something different.”

Conde Nast Traveler writes, “Transformative travel is the buzzword at this contemporary oceanfront resort. The location gives it easy access to adventure expeditions around Baja California, downtown San José del Cabo, and the Marina in Cabo San Lucas. But it’s also a place for an inner journey, starting with sublimely comfortable rooms with plush beds, marble floors, custom furnishings, and barely-there barriers between indoor and outdoor living. Many rooms have secluded patios, views of the Sea of Cortez, private plunge pools, and, that ultimate indulgence, the outdoor shower. There’s an extensive spa, and a 24-hour fitness center. The diverse dining options include Cascabel, a showcase of modern Mexican cuisine with live cooking stations devoted to different regions.”
